Abstract
The aspiration cytology findings of a case of combined small cell and squamous cell carcinoma in the right lower lobe of the lung of an 83-year-old man are presented. The cytological smear was mostly composed of individual and loose aggregates of medium sized cells with vesicular nuclei, coarsely granular chromatin, small nucleoli, and marked nuclear smearing on a necrotic background containing many apoptotic bodies. In addition, there were a few small flat sheets of polygonal cells with prominent nucleoli and copious eosinophilic cytoplasm with a well defined margin. A subsequent lung biopsy showed identical cytological features of combined small cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Based on the immunohistochemical staining, the samples were positive for cytokeratin 5/6 in the squamous cell component and positive for cytokeratin 7 and neuroendocrine markers, including CD56, in the small cell component.
